Lighting is used in deco and BSP objects to give light or colors to properties, textures and instances. There is also no current way to add shadows or reflections to objects. There have been people who have tried to add shadows on avatars by adding a prop to the avatar, however this can only ever be used in the anything goes dim.
BSP lighting[]
Also known as static lighting is lighting that is pre-defined in a given property. No matter what you do in regards to lighting you cannot turn of these location lights. Light area's can however overwrite them, however they would still shade differently then non-lit BSP areas, so any overlap is therefore counted.
Textural lighting[]
Lighting by shading textures[]
There is a difference between BSP lighting and textural shading, sometimes Utherverse textures have shading build into the texture, making it appear like it is lighted, however this would only ever effect the lighting of the texture and not an avatar.
Props that give light[]
Certain props appear to be giving light such as the Sconce Light, but this is an illusion.
Ambient lighting on props[]
You can light props separately from any other object by playing with the three lighting settings on the State tab:
- Emissive is the light that the prop has itself, that, light increases its own brightness, and it is white light ever. From 0 (not at all) to 255 (maximum). Note that this light 255 is equal to "Unlit".
- Ambient is the intensity with each prop takes the "Ambient Color" light. With 255 takes light exactly as it was in the trigger light, and decreases to 0 which assumes no ambient light.
- Diffuse is the intensity with each prop takes the "Color directional." Light, as the ambient light, but with directional light
Depending on how you set up the light and the effects you want to achieve, all three adjustments are important.
Lighting scripts[]
There are a couple of scripts that can lighten up your decorating and also lighten up anyone or any object within the range of these lighting scripts.
Light Area and Light Area Extended[]
These two scripts are added to a trigger box prop to light an area.
Light Area[]
Light Area is the main script for light areas and is the easiest to use. This script has four parameters:
- Name
- Ambient Color
- Directional Color
- Direction
The Light Area (extended)[]
This script has one parameter, Region. It connected to an existing Light Area using the name of the region that is used in the Light Area script that this extends. It is used to create complex areas. Because trigger boxes have a cubic shape, you give the appearance of a more articulated shapes or if you have different areas in which you want to set the same lighting, use various Light Area (extended) triggers. This has the advantage of adjusting only one main trigger (on the first Light Area).
Light Source[]
The Light Source script can attach to a prop. Depending on the distance an avatar or object is to this light source the lighting is affected from that direction. This script has three parameters:
- Region
- Color
- Intensity
Note that there is a maximum of eight light sources at a single location.
Light Strobe and Light Strobe Color[]
These two scripts allow flickering of lights at a specific interval, it is also possible to color these with the Light Color Strobe script.
Light switches[]
These have been introduced very recently and it is now possible to toggle light sources, light areas and light area extended, by toggling the state. This is achieved by the Trigger Linked Script.
